At that point the brush no longer had ANY pressure against the commutator. When this happens there can be arcing which can actually damage the commutator, so you're lucky. The brushes almost always wear at the same rate, so there's never a reason to replace just one. > I never changed the lower because I thought generator removal was necessary. You can just stick your finger under there and feel it. If you're not sure what to feel for, "educate" your finger on the top one, then move to the bottom. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
