The starter does not turn the engine at all. If your battery voltage is good (12-13V), drop the starter and test it/have it tested. Also, clean the living piss out of the starter terminals, the connectors, the battery posts & cable ends, the *other* end of the ground strap, the body-to-trans ground strap, and maybe even take some steel wool to the area on the transaxle where the starter mounts. You want shiny-metal-to-shiny-metal and *tight* -- connections are critical. Cleaning/checking all of that may not cure the starter problem, but it's a good "maintenance" thing to do. Plus, it's free so if it *does* cure the problem you just saved yourself some money. Over the years I've fixed more starting/charging/ electrical gremlins than I want to think about by just cleaning the connections... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
