I said it at the time we called in, Iowa - at least the view from Russ' homestead - looks a lot like parts of (old) England - green, rolling, gentle landscape, not aggressively spectacular and brash. Spectacular is good for a vacation and gets your friends gasping at the photos, but could be hard to live in all year round. Nothing wrong with subtle differences from one season to another - you can appreciate the differences then. My favourite tree is (no. 1) The Larch (like Monty Python), as its contrasting deciduous nature for winter contrasts so well with the feathery vivid-green needles and pink flowers that appear in the spring.
