Some type 4s came with the bellows. 

Some of them had engines which were "sealed" around the beltline, like the 
beetles and 914s. Those didn't need a bellows.

Some of the type 4s had engines that were "open" around the edges, like our 
type 3s, and those engines, by necessity, had a bellows and ductwork.  I'm not 
sure, but it's possible that all type 4s actually came this way. The '72 
fastback 411 that I work on is like this. IIRC, it has a bellows and a duct 
that diverts upwards so it can suck air in from the louvers that must be in the 
deck lid.

I think the type 4 wagons had a bellows that just went straight to the rear, 
very much like the type 3 setup.
