I THOUGHT that all the type 3 RHS doors, at least after '68, came with the 
threaded nut inside AND an open hole from the outside. From the factory they 
had a plastic plug in that hole to cover it over. If you don't have anything 
there, you might want to test the surface with a magnet to see if someone might 
have covered it over with body putty.

I'd be very surprised if there was actually a nut there under undisturbed sheet 
metal, but you can take the door apart and feel up there from the inside.
It's a tight squeeze, but if you have small hands you should be able to reach 
it. I'd do that first, before you start drilling.

I know that I've got one of those nuts somewhere. I just don't recall where I 
saw it last.

I know this topic has come up before and some people seem to have plain RHS 
doors. I don't recall the outcome of those threads.
