Assuming that you removed the wire from the DF terminal first, that actually 
sounds fine. You have to remove that wire in order to get the VR out of the 
picture; it will confuse the picture and the VR will likely be damaged in the 
process.

If you then reconnect the DF wire, how much voltage do you get at med/high rpm? 
As you go up in rpm the voltage (as measured at the D+ terminal) should rise to 
14-15V and then regulate there. If it comes up less, replace the VR with a 
Bosch 30-019.

Look and feel is generally enough.
