One could argue that there was a lot of NSU in those early designs, more
so even than Audi. Audi had long been building 2-stroke vehicles before
being sold to VW in '64, and the "Audi" was their first 4-stroke
offering in a while. In fact, it wasn't too long before the sale of Auto
Union to VW that all they were producing was DKW motorcycles and some
delivery vans. NSU had been producing cars since '58 but had fallen on
hard times owing to the high-profile failures of their rotary engined
vehicles.
Historical footnote I just love: NSU originally started off as
Neckarshulm Strickmaschinenfabrik, the Neckarshulm Knitting (or Sewing)
Machine Factory.
