throttle cable in a customer's car. I'm just guessing, but I suppose that
the
FI is easier on the cable than carbs, especially aftermarket carbs.
I can also imagine problems arising if the cable is routed poorly: not
linked
to the pedal carefully, Bowden tube not threaded smoothly between the body
and
the engine breast plate, rear cable end not connected so that it can rotate
easily, etc. >>
I've broken 3 cables in the last 16 years. Two of them were in bugs, and one
in my Notch. The bug cables broke up next to the pedal, while my Notch broke
right next to the barrel clamp (in the engine compartment). I used a piece of
stainless steel welding rod to fix my Notch cable (lengthened it 2 inches), and
it's been fine for over 2 years. The other 2 broke right after a stop sign
(not the same one either), and required a little more ingenuity to fix. I used
the passenger heater flap cable stop on the floor for a new cable stop on one.
On the other car I was about 2 miles from work (in the dark at the time), so I
just turned up the idle speed on the carb, and nursed it to work. I used some
stainless steel mig wire (.035) to fake a cable for it (during lunch). It
worked great right up to and after I sold it 5 years later. : ) Since then, I've
carried an extra cable and bits and pieces to fix one ever since (you never
know when you might need it for something else).
