I left VW's employ shortly before the WBX engine appeared,('79), so I
don't have much experience with it. From looking at those pictures, I
would say that it has some of both T-1 and T-4 gene pool. The oil filter
of the T-4 and the lower end area of the T-1. The accordian push rod
tubes of the T-1, and the pulley end oil seal of tha T-4. The fuel pump
of the T-1, and the case bottom of a T-4.
