Yep, that sounds right. It's odd to find that wire completely disconnected, but 
with these abused old cars you just never know....

Right, let it cycle a few times and it may close off completely. It may also 
help that the engine compartment lid is closed and it can heat up in there a 
bit more.

They are probably even better off just left open. The covers always carry the 
possibility of holding water in there, and a little grease left on them will 
protect them 'til next time. Just wipe them clean, which you should do anyway, 
before you lube again.
