While it's certainly true that all modern cars that I know of put the filter after the pump, I believe all the D-Jet FI systems put it in front. It's been too long since I've had the pleasure of working on a 914/4 for me to rely on my memory for this, but I have the the Haynes and Bosch workshop manuals here to refresh my memory. I just checked and they show the 914/4 fuel filter to be in front of the pump for both the D & L Jetronic FI systems. It's certainly true that the later K-Jetronic systems, as used in Rabbits, etc, put the filter after the pump, but that filter was in a steel can (and the pressure was higher, too.) I was surprised that I could not find a good confirmation of this for the type 3 in the Bentley. The best I could find is a comment in the Lub & Maint chapter that the filter must be installed with the arrow indicating flow direction must point toward the pump. The Elfrink manuals have clear drawings showing the filter before the pump for both the type 3 & 4. The Bosch workshop manuals show the filter before the pump for the type 3, 4, & 914/4. I've often thought about installing a second (stronger) filter after the pump, just to catch any wear particles which the pump might give off if it was failing, but I've never actually done that, and never suffered from the lack of it. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
