We can thank VW for some confusion here. M249 is the option number for 
an automatic transmission, but before automatics were introduced the 
M249 option code was used to designate a lowered compression version of 
the 1500S engine (flat top as opposed to domed pistons; 1500 engines 
had a similar option M240 which substituted dished pistons for the 
standard flat ones). That's the M249 Dave was referring to, not the 
auto trans.
