Yes. Set the distributor where it will fit, then attach the plug wires. 
They won't be as tidy as with the stock position,  but everything will 
still work fine.

As for the distributor drive, you know you have to twist it a bit as it 
comes out, right? It's engaged with the gear on the crank. Squirt some 
lube in there, maybe get a bigger magnet. I gather you've already got 
the shims out OK.
