There should be about a 5/8" vent hose running from the R. rear corner of the tank to right below the gas cap. This is to allow air back out, as the tank is being filled. On the L.rear corner of the tank, there is a vent line that is about 1/8" diameter. The fitting on the tank where this connects is sometimes rusted closed. This vent line went up, and across to a T connected near that 5/8" line. It also went to the charcoal filter that was located under the left front fender, or over the transmission, or the engine compartment, depending on the year. The metal lines going to the charcoal canister are probably rusted closed by now, and you are not venting the tank properly. Try blowing into the 1/8" line into the tank and see if that is open. If it is, then reroute this hose up as high as you can in the trunk, then out into the the area behind the spare tire. The upward loop is to keep it from siphoning gas when the tank is clear full. -- Russ Wolfe '71 FB AT '66 FB MT '64 T34 (not running) '65 T1 (not running) russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
