You don't really need the damper. It was there just to help get rid of
pump noise.

My '71 FB is running a pump off a Ford Ranger Pickup. It has no return
line from the pump to the tank. I just eliminated the "Y" fitting. Mine
was installed in an emergency, and has been on there for about 2 years,
with no problem.
