Sounds like some wires melte, not sure why...maybe the wires to your speedo
and gas gauge were frayed-and therefore not working, hit a bump-and the
frayed wires hit something else...causing a short, and melting wires? Not
really sure. 

Check vintagebus.com for wiring diagrams.
