A production run in the late 60's had the fender vents punched the wrong
way. The leading edge of the "gill" should be attached, and the trailing
edge should be open. IIRC, the reverse happened on these.

VW issued a service bulletin, and the repair was to chisel out the
existing vents as a panel and rivet on a replacement panel with the
vents facing the right way.

Indeed, if the vents are pointing the wrong way, they can severely
restrict airflow at higher speeds.

I'm sure Russ knows about this issue all too well.., I've even had a VW
service manager who started out as a mechanic in the  late 60's bring
this up recently when I mentioned I had a type 3.
