I agree about the 1/2 shift fork. I'd concentrate on the external stuff first. 
Seems most likely that it's some wierdness with the coupler or the bushing that 
keeps the shift finger (hockey stick) from stopping in the middle. Check the 
set screws at the coupler also. They are supposed to be safety-wired in place.
