Interesting Toby - haven't got time for it all, but aero-6.gif shows the back rake angle as to be less than 35 degrees (Beetle, maybe , but not Squareback) to get away without a rear wiper. It also says that increasing airflow underneath improves the situation - maybe our cooling air ouflow helps. Suction into the side louvres may help - I assume the air flows along the sides into them, in which case the area behind the louvres should be a low pressure, and will help the air flow down over the rear window .... maybe.
