This is the case for high speed cars, but whether it applies to our cars is speculative. Back in the design days of the T3, I don't think this was a factor.
These days whether a feature is for a real affect, or for looks is questionable. The Boxer has one that comes up automatically at speed to provide the downward affect.

ISTR the little flip or wing often added at the end of the roof on estates (station wagons) and hot hatches helps separate the airflow and start the turbulence.
