I gather that this was a rebuilt engine. There is a huge range of quality in rebuilds, so my guess is that you got one nearer the bottom of the range. There could be problems with the fit of the parts, or with the workmanship in the assembly. The thermostat could have been left out, so that this was a pretty rough 33k mi. Maybe it didn't get an align bore even though it needed one, or maybe it got a poor one. There are many possibilities. Are ALL(see the pictures in the Bentley manual) your bits of cooling tin in place, and is the cooling air intake bellows in good shape? Is the thermostat working and adjusted right? If there is something wrong with the fuel system, you could be diluting the oil with gas, which will thin it out. What's your gas mileage like? It should be over 20 mpg. What year do you have and is it FI or carbs? Or, maybe your sensor is just out on the edge of the bell curve. Has this engine done this all the time you've had it? What grade of oil do you use, and how often has it been changed? You could try switching to straight SAE 30, but I don't recommend going thicker than that. Modern 10W-40 is fine, however. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
