I got the rear brakes done on the Crate, and found that at 33Kmi the rear
brakes had gone to the rivits on one side and had been replaced shortly
before the car was taken off the road. I was really astounded though that
one of the wheel cylinders was STILL GOOD! This car hasnt had brakes in at
least 15 years, probably 20 and in fact, the brake pedal is rusted right to
the floor! I plucked the pistons out and no rust at all, just some gunk in
there. The other one was rusted up pretty bad.
What had me a bit bothered though was that there was alot of oil
contamination in the drum, The rear seals had been done once before but
seemed to be leaking again.... only instead of going out the weephole at the
bottom of the seal cap the oil had gotten into the drum and contaminated the
shoes. Also, is there supposed to be a seal between the backing plate and
the axle? The ones in the kit didnt have a big enough center diameter to
fit so I used some RTV.
Ill tell ya though, nothing smells worse than an old rear end!
