The muffler you describe would have been used on 411/412 sedans. 411/412 wagon mufflers (and later on Type 2s with Type 4 engines) had the outlet pipe mount on the side of the muffler, on the passenger side.


Little bit of trivia: Most of the outlet pipes that are on offer for the side outlet style mufflers are bus outlet pipes. While the original 411/412 pipe is a simple 90 degree angle job the bus pipe is longer and actually angles slightly towards the front before that 90 degree bend.
