Funny thing, clearing the garage I found a bag with 53 of those 'too small' rings. Shame they weren't the right size or we could have solved the world shortage of Type 3 heat exchanger gaskets. Internal diam is about the same as the pipe (around 32mm) but I think when crushed they would stick into the gas flow, and would need packing around to stop them moving sideways when tightening things, resulting in them not sealing.
