I would just add that wet sanding helps the paper last longer, and leaves the grit more effective. Dry sanding clogs up quickly and loses effectiveness rapidly. It also produces dust. Watch out for edges unless you're doing a bare-metal respray - the paint layer is already very thin there. Use a backing block (eg cork) or a proper plastic holder of a size that suits the panel - lovely long one for a large flat surface. Fingers moving sideways not in line, with the paper folded 3 or 4 thicknesses is OK for smaller areas. You will get very smooth fingers though, with little by way of fingerprints. Expect to drop all sorts of things after, but think of the crimes you could commit! No doubt a dual-action (DA) air sander used with wet sanding would help on the bigger areas, and a random orbit electric sander would work dry for coarser work, but even more dusty. Dave.
