The VW water-cooled engines need the complete sump pan removed to get at the strainer gauze. We nearly lost a w/c engine with a blocked strainer, probably due to lack of oil-changes by a PO. Had it been accessible it would have been kept clean. Luckily a journal polish and new bearing shell has given another 70,000 miles of life so far. Dave.
