<x-flowed>If you can get someone to machine it and remain within wear limit
tolerance, it would fix it permanently, and it's not as big and
heavy as a flywheel to mount up in a lathe, so it shouldn't be
difficult to do, but if you can get a speedy sleeve, it sounds
like an instant DIY fix as well. Depends on what's available in
your vicinity as the best way to go.

I went and picked up the torque converter. I'll post pictures in
the morning - it's worth seeing.
I took the drive plate and showed it to the guy in the shop. He
spent quite a long time feeling it with his fingers, and
pronounced that all it needs is some very light machining, and
that the groove is not deep at all. This person really seems to
know what he's talking about - he gave me a bit of a lecture on
the differences between the VW 003 and the 010 transmissions - so
my inclination is to trust his advice.
