I believe the punch or scratch marks were to be made if the car was serviced, 
just so the parts could be put back together the same way they were found.

ISTR that there was supposed to be a similar paint mark on the crankshaft, so 
that leaves 3 marks to be staggered around. I don't think I've ever seen a 
paint mark on the crank.
