It's really fine just laying there. The tranny case and starter form a sort of 
V-groove which holds the cable nicely. I wouldn't put a P-clip under a side 
cover stud, because those covers are under a lot of stress from the 
differential, and putting a piece of plastic there would make it a lot less 
rigid.
