Today I finally had a bit of time for the Crate engine again. I checked the old Notch engine and found the flywheel in better shape. the teeth were a bit chewed on the outside edge but the rest was fine, and the car had just had a new clutch installed before it was abandoned! unfortunately... one of the peices was cracked on the friction plate so it was junk but the flywheel was nice and smooth. The Notch engine (65) had a paper gasket under the flywheel, the crate engine (also 65) was metal... Im assuming that the type of gasket is flywheel dependant and not a change in the crank... cause I used a paper gasket with the flywheel it came with. I got the endplay set... but those shims do wear... quite a bit. If your not careful to get the worn surface back up against what was wearing against it (flywheel or bearing) you may get the end play right but once that thin unworn ridge wears down the play will open right up! Wish there were more 6V shims around but I got it right with what I had. I noticed some white paint on the flywheel and the pressure plate... since they are no longer a matched pair I lined up the paint anyway... hopefully everything will be in good balance.
