<x-flowed>Doohh.... Jim, your explanation below sounds even more likely than the rear hatch seal. My generator light is flickering, the generator has visible sparks inside, and engine is running real rich... darkish smoke. Exactly what you describe below. Even though I knew this was something to fix, I didn't think the fumes would get inside the car like they are.... regardless, I'll address the generator first, then the seal. Thanks gain! -Jim

There are several things to check:

Check the rear door seal, and the adjustment of the rear door.

Check the 2 lower seals where the heat exchangers connect to the muffler. If
those leak, they will blow fumes forward into the heat exchanger jacket, and
even if you think the heat is turned off, some may get inside.


Check the charging system voltage. It should be above 13.5V at med rpm and a
warm engine. If it is lower than that, the FI will run rich and that really
aggravates any other problems, as well as giving poor power, poor gas mileage,
and excessive engine wear.
