You're right about the time it takes carbs to fill again - I pump the accelerator (gas) pedal many times then give it a short churn on the key to see if anything's happening, then pump again several times, and turn again, pumping madly as the engine turns over, and keep pumping until it's OK and running responsively. It's quite hard to flood them, I find. If I had a battery in poor condition, I would probably use a small squeezy bottle of fuel and fill the carbs first via the fuel hose with the air-cleaner off. Alternatively you can fill through the overflow tube instead, taking care not to flood, but as it's not easy to get at anything in there anyway, so you may as well pump the pedal. Don't keep fuel in a plastic bottle (apart from the obvious risks) - I once had fine flakes of polythene come off the bottle and ruin my carb cleaning job! It's certainly easier turning the key on and off on a FI and waiting for the air bubbles to stop bubbling in the tank. Does your fuel pressure regulator 'sigh' when pressure is built up? That was the sign for my injection Fastback that it was ready to start. An 8 yr old Interstate Megatron sounds more like a Dr Who monster than a battery. ;-) Dave.
