[T3] Significant Fumes

I just drove home last week a '70 Squarback that is original with F.I., has 
a lot of rust, but runs and drives.  My question is:  there's a lot of fumes 
inside the car but the engine isn't smoking much.  Was looking for ideas on 
what to check.  Heat exchangers shouldn't have exhaust running through them 
so even if they were stuck open I wouldn't expect the smalls I'm getting. 
Any thoughts on what to check really appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
