I strip mine down to the bare shaft, clean and lube everything, replace
damaged screws and worn-down shaft washers (including the fiber ones),
clean contacts, set new points, install new O-ring, and reset the end
play with washers. Be careful of the advance-plate grounding lead, it
can be more fragile than it looks. I check for crud between the weights
and the spring plate. I check the drive dog to make sure it's still
square -- they can get beat up if installed wrong, and timing precision
suffers. Jim strips the shaft too, which can rust inside, but this is
tricky. If it's not real cruddy, a good soak in penetrating oil and some
exercise of the shaft joint should tell you whether it needs more
attention. Finish it off with a few drops of motor oil in the top of the
shaft. If your condenser is a Bosch, keep it and use it. I'd also expect
to work on the timing clamp, as they've almost all been radically
overtightened at some point and distorted. Mke sure it's a Type 3 clamp,
with the long extension on the screw.
The 009 is a warning that the previous build wasn't necessarily the
best, and the most common screwup is setting the distributor drive for a
Type 1. If this is what you have, your stock diz won't fit right until
you fix it.
The easiest thing to screw up in installing a diz is you have to get it
fully seated, with the shoulder of the diz solidly against the case. The
new O-ring can make this hard, so be sure to lube it beforehand.
