I think only Squares have the Z-bar, which doubles as an overload spring. The camber compensator works the reverse of an anti-sway bar, keeping the outside rear axle from tucking under in extreme cornering. Baring in mind the *fat* tires and wheels on Sophie, you might get into this situation occasionally. Isn't this Naders "unsafe at any speed" Corvair problem?
I've done the modification that is mentioned in the Fisher book. The large cone shaped bumpers are still available from the dealer for the Type 1 z-bar (very similar to ours). Stack an extra one on top, it will not quite require pre-loading the bar (unless your lowered a bunch). I can't say what the difference is this way, as I was starting from nothing. I removed the clunking remains of the bar when I bought the car, and finally figured out how to rebuild one of the worn out metal/rubber/metal bushings. I think the car handles great with the front dropped a notch, the rear end sagged a bit, GR-2 shocks and the Z-bar mod. My poor 165 tires are taking a beating, they often as not are squealing round off-ramps and such! Very light car and little body roll makes this fun.
