Congratulations. Just out of curiosity, was this something that the
inspector
seemed to be interested in, or did he seem annoyed by being asked to do
something out of the ordinary?
I'm not sure if it's the inspector's job to consult other sources than
what they have in the database on their laptop. The guy was very nice
and pleasant, it was just that when he showed up the first time he
couldn't gather that information in a timely fashion so he knew he had
to come back. I told him that I had written to VW here in Germany to
get technical data (the same place where they do those "birth
certificates" by the way), so we were waiting for that. But 6 (!) weeks
later VW came back and said that the microfilm with information about
my specific chassis number was too old and brittle so they could not
help me. So I talked to the inspector again and he promised to try and
dig something up, and he was successful.
