So, my new '67, has a leaky transmission.

it's supposedly a newly rebuilt transmission from rancho transmissions.
it's swing axle.

It doesn't look like the axle retainer can be replaced without replacing
the whole axle. there's a flange welded on it that connects to the
suspension, and that looks like it would have to be removed and re welded
to replace the retainer plate.

So, for now we're going to try and turn the "leaky welds" from the bottom
side to the top, in the hopes that it will leak less.

Well, we tried this out. It seems to "leak less" but it's still leaking enough to be a problem. Now from new weld points on the bottom, of the axle retainer, as well as apparently along the upper seam of the two plates that make up the axle retainer. Indicating that it was probably not holes at the welds, but the axle retainer having separated somehow?

Next step seems to be to replace the axle retainer plate.
which without complicated cutting and rewelding seems to mean
replacing the whole axle tube. Because there's a mount on the
axle tube for the sway bar, that won't let the axle retainer plate
pass off.

So, I think I'm in the market for an axle retainer plate, and axle tube,
that will work on a '67. anyone have one? anyone know what years are
compatible?

I'm also going to contact the previous owner to see if he put them on
or if the tranny came with the axles attached from rancho. Perhaps I can
get a part from rancho transmission to fix it.

turned out they were the original from the car, so it's my problem. rancho only supplied the transmission. not the axles, bits.

The mechanic I'm working with says that the axles retainers are
actually from a '68 as it was the only year where the flange on the
axle retainer came out and then bent back 90 degrees.

He thinks he might be mistaken on this now.
saying that for bugs, this type of flange on the axle retainer, ( and corresponding
O ring seal. ) were only on '68 bugs. but they might have been there on '67 type III's
