Do you have the FAQ that I wrote to help people answer this question? To get to the oil cooler you have to remove almost everything covering the left side of the engine. You have to remove the generator, coil, spark plug wires, and distributor. Then the left side intake runners and injectors. Then you will be able to see more bolts. There are 2 around where the fan housing blows into the cooling tin. There are 2 into the top of the head. There are 2 into a plate that surrounds where the spark plug wires used to go. There are one or 2 near where the injectors used to be, and 1 in front (front is front) of the # 3 cylinder. Yes, getting all the screws out is probably the hardest part of this job. Once all the screws are out they you have to lift up and remove the cooling tin on that side. Once that is out of the way you can see the oil cooler and remove the 3 bolts/nuts that hold it down. Don't try to do this without consulting the oil cooler seal FAQ. If you need it I can email you a copy, or it is available from the type 3 web site as well as several other web sites. None of the manuals are completely clear on these points. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Shameless link for search engines: http://listarchive.type3.org ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
