I asked a powertrain buddy of mine at Ford today and he suggested it was typical in the 12-15% range for a manual transmission and a bit higher for an automatic. On Sep 1, 2004, at 6:59 PM, Toby Erkson wrote:
15%-20% loss is what I've always read when estimating hp loss from crank to wheels.

I can't help wondering how much loss we should expect in the drive train. The number I kept hearing at the car show was 20%. Rule of thumb was a 20% loss from the flywheel to the road with a manual transmission. Don't know about an automatic. I will ask a few of my powertrain buddy's at Ford this question tomorrow. 20% seems consistent with numbers I got for Sophy.
You may be right, but that sure sounds high to me.
I also surfed around the web and found this article

Looks like the 15-20% is pretty good.
