For a given transmission, wouldn't the loss be measured in
absolute horsepower lost (presumably as a function of gear selection
and transmission rpms), rather than a percentage of input horsepower?
Another way to look at it... if I'm going 35mph in third gear
on the flat, and then the road begins to climb... I maintain speed by
pressing the gas pedal more. Why would the transmission start to
suck more power under these conditions? Are there bigger inter-gear
forces or something like that which make things heat up?
Anyway, a little googling hit on a very long thread on this
topic. Most of the numbers batted around are in the range of 90+%
efficiency:
