What I didn't mention was taht I went for a 10min test drive immediately after putting everything back together and finishing the tune up. It ran fine during the test drive. I guess if it was a valve clearance problem or mixed up plug leads it would have happened then. I didn't change the timing as I have a 009 and no way of checking total advance at revs and dwell was 49.7deg. That leaves a sticking valve in 3 or 4, I don't see how running rich could cause a backfire through the carb. I thought that a valve would need to be stuck open when the spark goes off to cause this. Would a compression check confirm this? I'll pull the carbs off and check for blockages just in case.
