I agree that this is wrong, but I think it is a separate problem. Is it
possible that you're doing the adjustment wrong; ie, how familiar are you
with
adjusting your valves. If you've never/seldom done it before, there are a
number of ways that you can go wrong here.

I hope this is a separate problem. I'm not saying that I didn't make a
mistake, but I am quite familiar with the valve adjustment procedure.

Hmmm, cleaning the trigger points was going to be my first suggestion, so you
just stole my thunder....

It actually is your thunder, Jim. I did this because in the archives you told
many others to try the same thing.

Try these tests:

Turn the key ON and then go to the engine. Listen while you depress the
throttle lever. You should hear a series of clicks.

Throttle positioner checks out just fine. I will run your other suggested
tests ASAP.

Then I found the actual problem -- red wire that went to a round
connector on the battery. It was hardly hanging on. Cut & resoldered
that one and car has run fine ever since.

I appreciate the advice, Aaron. But could you please be more specific? Which
red wire? And on what kind of round connector on the battery?

Elroy
