You may be fine. It's useful to learn to recognize knock. It sounds like a
handfull of marbles being slowly dribbled into a metal wastebasket. If you have
it, you'll hear it at low RPMs when you give the engine full throttle. If you
don't hear this you may not have a problem.

It's never a problem at high speeds or cruising, unless your timing is WAY out
of whack (way too advanced.)

If you hear this, you can just let up on the throttle at low RPMs, or you can
try adding something that can up the octane. One thing that can help here is
gasohol, or you can just add alcohol to the gas. Octane enhancers are also sold
everywhere, but don't get carried away; use only as much as it takes to make
the knock go away.

The alternative requires an engine rebuild.
