Here's the latest: As I mentioned before with the timing light hooked to the HV coil wire I get only an occasional and erratic flash when the engine is turned over. If I ground this wire the flashes come regularly. The voltage on the Distributor side of the coil fluctuates between 6V and 0 as the engine is turned over. I hooked a wire directly from the battery to the points but the car still wouldn't start. I cleaned my battery connections and looked at the tranny ground strap. It's there and looks fine, I didn't want to mess around with it if not necessary. The leads are hooked up to the correct connections on the coil. Now what?
