Following up on the recent suggestion that one could buy magnetic cold air vent
covers at Home Despot, I drove my square over there last sunday and found them.
They come in 3-paks, with each sheet 8" x 15", for about $9/pak. For some
reason, only one side will stick well to metal, so that leaves a white side
exposed. It's possible that the white layer could be peeled off, leaving the
chocolate brown exposed, or that it could be painted or magic markered; I've
tried neither.
I bought one package, and cut one of the sheets up yesterday using a paper
cutter to get a nice clean cut. It looks like strips 4" x 13" are more than
enough to cover the front louvers in '71-73 type 3s. I don't have an early ('67-
'70) car handy here, so I couldn't measure what it would take for one of those.
Would anyone care to measure what size those would take?
Even earlier cars (up thru '66?) have those louvers down in a depression, so I
don't know how well this would work. It might work well if some kind of filler
could be put down in the depression to fill it, allowing the magnetic sheet to
cover smoothly over the whole works. I think I have some thin foam rubber that
would actually work nicely there. Would someone with one of these very early
louvers care to measure how big the depression is and how large the magnetic
sheet would have to be to span it?
I applied a pair to my square last night, just to see if they would follow the
curved sheet metal or not. They conformed beautifully, although a bit of
trimming might be nice, just to clear the wiper sharts. It looks like these
might even seal rain water out, but my main goal is to keep out leaves.
If anyone needs a pair of these feel free to contact me, as I have more than I
need, or just visit your local Home Despot or hardware store.
