Literally for hours. Don't try this on most cars, however, the type 3 and 4 
engines are nearly unique in that the cooling fan is mounted on the crankshaft 
so cooling continues even after the belt breaks. I once drove home most of the 
way from Chicago to Madison with a broken belt and still had enough juice to 
easily restart the car, just as a test, after I had arrived home and parked.

Here's a long shot: I've seen several '71s where a fixing screw had been left 
out at the factory. Check the little steel elbows at the top of the heater 
mixer boxes. These are the boxes up and to either side of the front of the 
tranny. You may find that ONE of those elbows is missing the screw that secures 
it to the mixing box. That will make a very hard to find rattle.
