Don't try this on most cars, however, the type 3 and 4 engines are nearly unique in that the cooling fan is mounted on the crankshaft so cooling continues even after the belt breaks. I once drove home most of the way from Chicago to Madison with a broken belt and still had enough juice to easily restart the car, just as a test, after I had arrived home and parked. > It's kind of a magic sound. Check the little steel elbows at the top of the heater mixer boxes. These are the boxes up and to either side of the front of the tranny. You may find that ONE of those elbows is missing the screw that secures it to the mixing box. That will make a very hard to find rattle. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
