The special battery had a lead probe which stuck down from the top into one of the cells. If the water level was high enough it touched that probe and there would then be voltage on that terminal. The Computer Diagnosis system could sense that voltage and would assume that all the rest of the cells were equally full. If there was no voltage there, then the CD system would tell you to add water. OE batteries came with that sensor there, but I don't know if there were even replacements available with it. IIRC, I bought a new battery from the dealer in the early 70s and it didn't come with that sensor. I think I may have one or two of those sensors saved downstairs, just in case I came across a battery that I could use it in. They were just a light press fit into a hole molded into the top of the battery. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
