You have the right dipstick tube. Leave it that way.

FIrst you need to fix your dipstick cap gasket. Either get a new gasket, or 
find a whole "new" dipstick (I have them) that has a good gasket. This will 
seal that crankcase opening.  

Then look under the RHS of the intake air distributor, just below and in front 
(front is front) of the cold start valve. You should see a metal pipe facing 
rearwards. There should be a hose connecting your plastic breather vent nipple 
to that pipe.  

There should also be a hose coming up from each rocker box to the 2 nipples on 
the RHS of the air cleaner. It's just barely possible that you're hearing the 
noise from air being sucked into that metal pipe.

This is a good system and is correct for your '72.
