You can try to score a used Beetle transmission (of the right year) and just throw that bad boy in.
The reverse gear itself is the same, but type 1 and type 3 transmissions have different gear ratios. It should not be hard to find a proper type 3 transmission, and that is a much better option. I have several good used type 3 trannys here.
If Mike needs a transmission and can't get to Hershey, maybe I can get one as far as Hershey and someone else can carry it back toward NYC afterwards.
