Has little to do with fuel economy... but a quart is 1000 is normal, some cars use less but not all of them. Ever drive a modern Ford? :-) at 140K my 87 Golf doesnt use a drop between changes, but my Square will go through a quart in 300 miles if I drop the throttle alot. Most cars use some oil.... remember, you can engineer great things but they cost money... and to keep cars cheap they dont worry about some oil consumption.
